Promotion / Advancement Requirements

Sergeant: 2 years service as an officer with Gulfport Police and a minimum of 64 semester hours of college credit or a minimum four (4) years of experience as a sworn police officer with the Gulfport Police Department; written exam; performance evaluation.

Lieutenant: 2 years service as a Sergeant with Gulfport Police and a minimum of 64 semester hours of college credit or a minimum six (6) years of experience as a sworn police officer with the Gulfport Police Department to include a minimum of two (2) years as a Sergeant with the Gulfport Police Department; written exam; performance evaluation.

Captain: 2 years service as a Lieutenant with Gulfport Police and a minimum of 64 semester hours of college credit or a minimum ten (10) years of experience as a sworn police officer with the Gulfport Police Department to include a minimum of two (2) years as a Lieutenant with the Gulfport Police Department; written exam; performance evaluation.

Lateral Entry Program

Must be employed in a full-time position for at least 1 year as a sworn Police Officer or Deputy with current department, Corrections personnel are not eligible

Must have successfully completed a state certified basic police academy, any state – 400 hour minimum.

Must have current law enforcement officer state certification, any state.

Candidates cannot be on probation, on any mandated leave resulting from any department disciplinary action, nor have any pending disciplinary action.
